How to add Blogger Blog Sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools

If you have added your Blogger blog to Google Webmaster Tools, you are asked to add the sitemap. Although not required, it is rather helpful to let Google know how you want your site content to be crawled.

If you haven’t then here’s how to add your blogger blog to Google Webmaster Tools.

You could tell Search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing etc. about URLs or pages on your blog/site which is available for crawling.
It is always wise to add Blogger blog sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools. While submitting BlogSpot blog to Google’s Webmaster Tool, one often wonders what and how to submit as the sitemap.
If you have a blogspot hosted blog i.e.
http://yourblog.blogspot.com
Then you need not do anything at all.
All you need to do is copy this:
sitemap.xml
And paste it in the ADD Sitemap section of Google Webmaster Tools.
If you have a self hosted Blogger Blog or if you have moved it to WordPress then you need to do the following.
1. Log into your Blogger Dashboard
2. Click on Setting in the left hand panel
3. Then Click on Search Preferences
4. Under the heading Crawlers and Indexing click on Edit Custom robots.txt and copy paste the following code:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /search
Allow: /
sitemap: http://www.yourblog.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
Disallowing search will ensure that search engine spiders don’t crawl Labels (which could be multiple for a single post) and index then as a separate page which often leads to Canonical issue as same content gets indexed as separate pages.
Whenever a search engine bots enters a site it first reads the robots.txt file. Enabling above mentioned command with make sure that bots detect your sitemap every time they enter your blog/site and you need not submit sitemap on Google Webmaster Tools.
